Wellington Filipino Community Choir
The Wellington Filipino Community Choir first came together in 1996 to perform for Philippines’ President Fidel Ramos state visit to New Zealand. The Choir re-formed in 1999 with its first concert “Miss Kita Kung Krismas” to help raise funds with Bulwagan Foundation for Filipino Community Centre. Since then they meet every week moved by an inherent love for singing and friendship.
Their repertoire covers a range from sacred music, spiritual, popular, jazz to Filipino Folk and OPM (Original Pilipino Music). A number of the songs they perform have been arranged by well known Filipino song writers and musicians.
WFCC is a mixed-voice choir. They are a lively friendly bunch and encourage one another. While some are experienced singers others have done little singing. It is certainly a stimulating place to be on Thursday nights.
The group has been self-directing for many years until Robert Ty came to one of our rehearsals. Robert is a gifted young choral director who saw the choir’s potential and decided to join us. He was mentored by Mr Warlito Yalung, Robert Delgado and Ms Anna Tabitha Abeleda-Picquero of the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers. He has shown passion and musical artisan in choral conducting thanks to his mentors. WFCC is privileged to have Robert as Musical Director.
As you can see the choir needs more male singers. Joining us is easy. You will need to have a love of singing, the ability to hold a tune, and a keen interest in learning more, developing skills in choral singing and a commitment to our weekly rehearsals (occasionally extra ones) and our performances – usually two to three major ones year and some smaller ones.
